LARRY HARLOWS LATIN LEGENDS OF FANIA ON BBC 2 LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND 26 NOVEMBER 2007
Don’t miss Larry Harlow’s Latin Legends of FANIA on Later with Jools Holland
BBC 2 Fri 30 Nov 11.35pm
Featuring Larry Harlow, Adalberto Santiago, Yomo Toro, Lewis Kahn and Bobby Sanabria performing the Nuyorican vintage classics ‘Descarga Fania’ and ‘Quitate Tu’
Fania is to salsa what Motown is to soul - starting as a two-man operation in 1964, Fania became the biggest Latin label of all time, selling millions of records by artists they made into international icons. Fania captured the incendiary sound of El Barrio - the gritty streets of Latin New York in the 60s and 70s gave Latin music the phenomenal drive which was to take it global. Home to legendary names such as Willie Colon, Ray Barretto, Celia Cruz, Larry Harlow, Pete ‘I Like It Like That’ Rodriguez and Hector Lavoe, the Fania archive is a treasure trove of classics – from vintage mambo to the roots of salsa via boogaloo, latin soul and Afro-Cuban jazz. Now for the first time ever the entire catalogue has been remastered from the original source tapes. Fania is back with rare re-issues, new compilations and remixes by the likes of Gilles Peterson, DJ Format and Louie Vega.
Larry Harlow’s Latin Legends of Fania brings back that vintage Latin NY magic with vocalist Adalberto Santiago (Fania All Stars/Ray Barretto), first call cuatro player Yomo Toro (Fania All Stars), Fania All Stars’ trombonist Lewis Kahn and timbalero Bobby Sanabria (Ray Barretto/Tito Puente). One of Latin music’s great innovators, pianist, producer, composer and arranger Larry Harlow was a pioneer among the many talents involved with Fania Records, the label with which he recorded more than 100 albums by various artists, plus 50 under his own name. He is also a serious jazz player and inspired soloist, very recently sitting in with The Mars Volta. A key artist in the history of Latin music, Larry Harlow’s prolific and hugely successful career shaped the incendiary sound of El Barrio.

LARRY HARLOWS LATIN LEGENDS OF FANIA PLAY LIVE AT THE LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL SATURDAY 17 NOV 25 SEPTEMBER 2007 Founded in New York in 1964 Fania became the most important Latin label of all time. Fania captured the incendiary sound of El Barrio - the gritty streets of Latin New York in the 60s and 70s gave Latin music the phenomenal drive which was to take it global. WILLIE COLON - LIVE CONCERT IN LONDON FRIDAY 10 AUGUST, THE ROUNDHOUSE13 JULY 2007 Willie Colon will play live in London on Friday 10 August at The Roundhouse, London NW1. Don't miss the farewell show of a true salsa legend. Tickets 0870 389 1846. www.comono.co.uk
To celebrate this great artist, Fania is releasing Willie Colon - The Player - a deluxe double album in the A Man and His Music series. Willie Colon is one of Fania’s top artists and an icon of Latin music. Known as El Malo – this street tough bad boy cultivated a Latino gangster look that was to become his immensely popular trademark. His sound is hard and heavy street salsa, his own driving trombone playing and vocals led the songs that became the classic soundtracks of El Barrio – New York’s Latin Quarter. This double album features the top tracks spanning Willie Colon’s long career – from 1966 to 1989 – including collaborations with other Fania stars - Ruben Blades [from their 1978 album Siembra – the first Latin record to sell a million copies] and 'The Queen of Salsa' Celia Cruz. Massive hits in their time and now classics that still kick. This is the definitive collection of a salsa giant.

FANIA PRESENTS DJ FORMAT AT LOVEBOX FESTIVAL SUNDAY 22 JULY- EL BARRIO STAGE10 JULY 2007 Fania presents DJ Format Sunday 22 July at Lovebox Weekender Festival, Victoria Park, London.

Format's new release for the Fania DJ Series takes things deep into Latin New York, heavy on the Latin soul and boogaloo tip, hooky melodies, and 70s groove, cut up and mixed by one of hip-hop's favourite pioneers. His remix of Dave Cortez’s ‘Happy Soul With a Hook’ for Fania is already a hit with the vinyl junkies lucky enough to get hold of the limited edition 12” released earlier this year [and which will feature on the forthcoming Fania Remixed CD].
The sound of Latin New York is what this summer is all about. Come and get it.
