FANIA DJ SERIES: GILLES PETERSON
The Fania DJ series will feature some of the most respected turntable wizards delving deep into the vaults of the Latin label for a series of outstanding compilations. The DJs we invite into the Fania/Tico/Alegre and Cotique catalogue will bring together some of the rarest & most potent Latin recordings ever issued.
The first release is from Gilles Peterson whose schooling in Fania dates back to the Caister Weekenders in the late 70s. Since then Peterson has heard, played & unearthed many Fania nuggets, all very present and correct here. He has also worked with a number of the label’s artists on Talkin Loud’s superb ‘Nuyorican Soul’ project. This is his first Latin compilation. And it’s pure lean Latin hustle spread beautifully over 2 CDs.

La Lupe
Queen of Latin Soul
Fire? Passion? La Lupe wrote the book. While Celia Cruz was gloriously statuesque, vocalist La Lupe was an original fire-brand diva. An incredible performer who would bite musicians and throw her shoes at orchestra leaders, La Lupe burned red-hot and in 1968 had an extraordinary hit with her version of Fever, featured on this album. She delivered huge boleros such as Amor Gitano in pre-Almodovar kitsch technicolor and husky Cuban and Puerto-Rican folklore drenched in casino vibes. A wild and crazy one-off who is up there with the greats. La Lupe, she kicks.
